Yes... I know - leg warmers! Of all things, they are not sewn, but crocheted! I didn't do this with a pattern, as I never successfully mastered the terminology, but kind of on a whim as a way to pass the time while food was burning in the kitchen yesterday.

They're not perfectly crocheted - I know - but it was worth a shot. I found some yarn lying around the house and decided to do something with them. What do you guys think? Anyone else here who knows how to crochet?

And for those of you who dance - pardon the extreme lack of technique... I know, but feel free to critique if you can, phantomcheesy.

What was supposed to be a tendu from fifth but I ended up turning in and bending my knee for lack of room: http://www.phantomess.com/images/randomimages/crocheted/legwarmers3.jpg
Coupe (sp?) which I am not sure I did right:http://www.phantomess.com/images/randomimages/crocheted/legwarmers4.jpg

Not bad for making them without a pattern! How'd you get them to curve with the shape of your calves? And to stay up? I'm impressed! phantomgbigrin

As a better-than-amateur but less-than-expert crocheter, I would give only this advice: if you want them to be warmer, use a smaller stitch to make it more dense. As they are, I can see places where your skin shows through, and that would lead to loss of warmth (or so I assume, never having worn legwarmers. If that's actually a good thing, then please ignore me!). What stitch did you use? I'd guess at least a double, maybe triple, from the spacing... Experiment with single stitch, or maybe a half double, if you'd like them to be warmer. Make a small square of each stitch type to compare them and then use the one you like best.

Heck, for really warm ones, buy some of that yarn that's extra thick and nubby. Mmmm, I have a wonderful blanket made from that, it's soft and very warm! If you want to make a fashion statement, you could even go with eyelash yarn, or that kind that's ultra fuzzy! I've been making myself scarves from the ultra fuzzy yarn, and they're very warm when done, but it can be hard to get used to crocheting with it, since it's so fuzzy you can't see the stitches. You have to loosen your stitches a bit and use a bigger hook, but once you get used to working with it, it's a lot of fun!

I never saw this post!
They're super cute mrgreen I've tried knitting legwarmers before but it just takes *so* long.....And I'm very impatient. But they look good! Oh, and your tendu from fifth is totally correct with a bend knee. It's just called fondu phantomwink
