Worn during the climax of the movie, Christine sings as the lead of the Phantom's Opera, "Don Juan Triumphant." A truly intricate costume, as well as a very memorable one, worn my Emmy Rossum during one of the most intense scenes.
Breakdown and Descriptions
Corset and Chemise:
This costume has two corsets. If you look closely in the pictures below you can see a flesh colored overbust corset beneath the chemise:
For now, let's stick with the basics and an explanation of the layers will come later.
The outermost layer is a burgundy underbust corset. Look closely at the picture above, and you can see the corset also has the ziagzap stitching above the boning channels. There are six panels to the corset in front. The four panels in the middle are narrow and close together. This, as well as the front side panels, give the wearer a rather "hourglass" shape. There are, unfortunately, no shots of the back of hte dress, but I can assume there are atleast four panels on the back. It probably closes like a typical corset does, with lacing, or possibly hooks and eyes. The top of the corset is finished off with a dark burgundy colored piping. The bottom is edge with a gold (braided? crocheted?) trim with small gold metal pieces sewn on to the edge. The outfit reminds me of a gypsy. To complete the look, a small fake floral arrangement is attached to the top.
Fabric is unknown, I need to go back to my sources, but it almost seems to be of brocade. I could be wrong on that.
Now, for the corset underneath. We don't know if it is a complete corset, or just a corslett (which covers only the bust) but in the picture above, you can see it closes with a busk.
The overbust corset (fabric is unknown, if you have any suggestions, send them in) has a nice lace overlay. If you look at the picture above at the (our)left of the overbust corset, you can see there is a nice lace edge.
In the picture below, you can see the lace edge of the top of the overbust corset:
The chemise is made up of material similar to that of the dressing gown, and the All I Ask of You costume. Made of a fine netting/lace fabric the chemise closes up the front (oddly enough) with button snaps. See the picture above for reference.
The sleeve have a mind of their own. In the movie, its fun to watch them go up and down, they're tight enough to stay up for a period of time, but apparently, not completely fitted to the actress, so thus they do not stay up for long.
Above is a good shot of the sleeves. The sleeve seam curves upward, and the sleeve itself seems like an overlay, attached to the top of the chemise.
Now, how are they attached?
All three parts of the bodice, overbust corset, chemise, and underbust corset, are seperate pieces.
Skirt and "shawl":
Unfortunately, not much can be said for the fabric of the skirt and the pattern. The fabric almost see through, which you can see in this picture: this screencap (by Katherine). It is shorter in the front, and is trained in the back, which you can see in this picture.
The "ruffles" on the skirt are very interesting. The fabric was probably made like that, but I know other costumers who have made the "ruffled" fabric by sewing triangles onto the skirt, or by sewing ruffled strips. Either way works. The skirt is decorated with lots of small golden sequins, thought to be circular.
More on the shape of the skirt. If you look at here, at this screencap, the front of the skirt (and preferrably the rest of it) has a zig zag edge.
The shawl is made of a very fine, thin material. In most pictures, it looks black:
But if you look at this promo shot:
It is actually made of a very sheer, patterned material. The "shawl" is supposedly "tied" to her right hip, but I see no evidence of a knot, so it is probably sewn onto the skirt. That would be a practical way of handling the costume. If you look at the picture above again, look at her hip right below the gold trim of the corset, there appears to be a scalloped "belt" almost. You can see the same one in the picture below, on the side where the shawl is "tied."
The sheer scalloped trim appears to be sewn onto the edge of the shawl.
